Housing, Housing, Housing

“Everyone likes to talk about the weather, nobody likes to do anything about it”

The same could be said for the housing crisis.

The United States is chronically under supplied on housing and current solutions aren’t enough to fix it.

Especially in cities with high demand. It’s why an apartment in NYC costs multiples of what a mansion in downtown Detroit costs. Sorry Detroit caught a stray. There is plenty to be written about Detroit’s amazing revitalization efforts, but that's for a different day.

The US needs new and creative ways to approach long term housing supply.

Current estimates of housing undersupply range from 3-8+ million homes. There are only a handful of states in the country that even have 8 million homes total!

Not only that, the housing that is available is increasingly unaffordable, putting the ‘right’ housing option - apartment, townhouse, small home, large home, etc. - out of reach for a huge swath of Americans regardless of whether you are renting or buying.

You guys are smart and probably knew all of this already.

So the question is…so what? What is Unwritten going to do about it?

That’s a multi trillion dollar question! And no one has been able to solve it fully yet.

But there are a lot of ways to try and make a dent in the problem with creative opportunities. That’s where we’ve been spending a lot of time.

Over the coming weeks, we’re going to highlight some of these companies and founders and stories. A few that we working on now:

  • Renting better homes and sharing in the upside

  • Improving starter home quality and keeping them affordable

  • Reimagining housing construction at scale

  • Adding density to under utilized land

  • Drastically lowering upfront home purchase costs

  • Unlocking home value for folks trying to stay in their home

We’ve invested in some of these ideas already and we are excited to invest in more.  Particularly on the PropCo side of the OpCo/PropCo equation. Remember, no conflict no interest!

If you are building (hah) in the space, say hi!
